課程概述

Information systems (and its underlying information technologies) have become indispensable components in the modern enterprise. Information systems (IS) are one of the major tools available to managers for achieving operational excellence, improving decision making, facilitating product/service development or even innovations, and achieving and sustaining competitive advantage. In this “information economy” and “digital age,” there is a tremendous demand for managers that can combine technical skills with business insights to create values for their firms using IS.

課程目標
This course offers a comprehensive overview of information systems (IS). It will explore both technical and managerial issues related to IS. Fundamental concepts of IS and how they impact business firms will be discussed. Students will also be introduced to modern information technology infrastructure, including such important components as database management, telecommunications, and business intelligence and data analytics. We will also discuss alternative methods for building information systems. Finally, we will cover core IS applications and emerging innovations, that include enterprise applications, e-commerce, knowledge management, social commerce, and the Internet of Things (IoT).
課程要求
Group Assignment 1:
Students will form a group of 5 and participate in two group assignments. For Group Assignment 1, students will search tech magazines or forums for interesting IT innovations. Each group needs to identify an interesting, novel IT innovation, describe how this IT innovation works (including their underlying technologies), and any business model(s) for this IT innovation. Each group needs to turn in a written report and prepare a 15-minute presentation in class (on April 27, 2016).

Group Assignment 2: Business Plan for IT-enabled Innovations
For Group Assignment 2, students will work on a business plan that involves the use of some emerging technologies to design an innovative application.
1. Choices of technologies/topics: Internet of things (IoT), social, mobile, and business analytics.
2. Business plan: Students must develop a business plan on one of the above technologies (or the combination of some of the above technologies). The business plan must include value propositions for their innovation, market analysis, and operation process. We reserve one class for project workshop (May 25, 2016). Weeks 17 and 18 are reserved for the oral presentations of group assignment 2. Each group also needs to turn in a written report at Week 18.

Examination:
There will be one examination, in a format of in-class, close-book and open-note. All class lectures and required readings will be included in the scope for examination questions.

Class Participation:
The class is highly interactive in nature. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in class discussions to enhance their learning experience. In addition to class attendance, the levels of participation will be evaluated on the basis of each student’s contribution to class discussions.

Attendance:
There will be 9 class attendance checks, which will be carried out at a random basis. If you miss out 3 out of 9 class attendance checks, THERE WILL BE A FIVE-POINT PENALTY ON YOUR FINAL ASSESSMENT GRADE.
